Residential Program - Upper Paradise Site
The Upper Paradise Site Residential program is available to children 6-13 years of age and their families. These children are often experiencing emotional, social and behaviour difficulties, which are of such an intensity and frequency that intervention at a less intrusive level may not be of sufficient benefit to the child and family.
The service model offers three - three month phases of treatment lasting a total of nine (9) months. These include intensive treatment (phase one), integrated treatment (phase two), and a maintenance period (phase three).
During Phase One (when children are first admitted to the program) they attend the program for 5-7 days for a three month period of time. During Phase Two, the children attend the program on-site for half a week (either Sunday evening until Wednesday morning, or Wednesday evening until Saturday morning) and are visited at home by the Social Worker during the half of the week that they are at home. During Phase Three, the children spend two nights in the residential program, with weekly telephone contact during the time they are at home, and there is an at-home visit once per month by a Child & Youth Worker.
The model also offers weekly groups for children and parents for the first six (6) months, as well as scheduled individual and family sessions during this time period.
Children in residence may attend their own school or may be referred the Day Treatment classrooms at the Upper Paradise site. The individualized plan of care is developed in accordance to each child’s situation and circumstances, their developmental stage, and their individual needs. Discharge planning has clear direction from the beginning of each child’s stay. Parents, or guardians, who are a vital part of the treatment team, attend regular meetings with a Social Worker and work closely with the professional Child and Youth Work staff.
The Upper Paradise site has sixteen (16) beds and accommodates five (5) children in each of the three phases. There is also one (1) bed designated to provide respite care for children involved in other programs. The program is staffed by professional Child and Youth Workers and two Social Workers. Additionally, there are two full-time night workers who monitor the children during the night.
The team can also call upon the consultation of a Child Psychiatrist.
